In short: to check immigration application status Spain (your residence or work permit file), the Government Delegations and Subdelegations offer the service «Información sobre el estado de tramitación de los expedientes de extranjería», known as InfoExt2. You use it online, with Cl@ve or an identification form, by SMS to 651 714 610 or by phone on 902 02 22 22, with your NIE or file number. The data is informational and does not replace the notification. This card covers residence and work; tracking a citizenship application is a different service and a different card: citizenship application status.
In person or by representative? Online, by SMS or by phone. The InfoExt2 page does not describe a lookup by a representative and warns that legal-entity certificates cannot be used to act for third parties. For the extraordinary regularisation, the Ministry of Inclusion says a representative (lawyer, gestor, graduado social), a registered proxy or a collaborating entity can manage the file, including follow-up. For anything the service does not show you, the route is the Immigration Office of your province.
Requirements
- A NIE or a file number. For the SMS the file number must be exactly 15 characters; otherwise the system returns an error. If you do not have the full number, the sede FAQ says to ask your Immigration Office.
- You are not an EU citizen. The sede says the service is not available to citizens of the European Union, who must check their file at the office that processed their card.
- File already registered in the system. If the message is «NO SE HA ENCONTRADO LA INFORMACIÓN SOLICITADA» (no information found), the FAQ gives two possible causes: details wrong or not matching, or a file not yet computerised.
Steps
- Have your NIE or file number (15 characters) at hand.
- Choose a channel: online, SMS or phone.
- Online: open InfoExt2 and press «Entrar Cl@ve» if you have a Cl@ve method, or «Entrar formulario» to identify yourself and locate the file.
- By SMS: send to 651 714 610 «NIE» + space + your NIE (for example «NIE X00000111L»), or «EXPE» + space + the file number (for example «EXPE 280020101234567»). The NIE is in capitals with 8 digits padded with zeros.
- By phone: 902 02 22 22.
- Read the status. If you get an error message or nothing moves, see «What to do if it does not appear or does not change».
What the service shows. The status of your file, with a notice that the data is informational. The official pages we reviewed publish no list of statuses or their meaning. The sede FAQ only names «TRÁMITE» (in process) and «FAVORABLE», and two messages: «NO SE HA ENCONTRADO LA INFORMACIÓN SOLICITADA» and «SE ESTAN REALIZANDO TRÁMITES PREVIOS A LA GRABACIÓN DE SU EXPEDIENTE» (the system is waiting for data before it can show the status: check again later). If you have been in «TRÁMITE» for a long time, or you see «FAVORABLE» and no notification has reached you, the FAQ sends you to the Immigration Office. Do not interpret a status on your own.
Deadlines
- General decision period: 3 months from the day after the application enters the register of the competent body (RD 1155/2024, seventh additional provision, paragraph 1; LO 4/2000, first additional provision, paragraph 1).
- Own deadlines: each procedure may set its own. For example, 3 months for the initial residence and employee work permit (art. 77.6) and 1 month for seasonal activities (art. 103.4). Check the article for your procedure or its information sheet.
- No answer, in general: the application «may be deemed rejected» (negative silence; LO 4/2000, DA 1.1 and RD 1155/2024, DA 8).
- Exception: residence extensions, work-permit renewals and long-term residence applications are decided in 3 months and, with no express answer, are deemed granted (LO 4/2000, DA 1.2; for long-term residence, RD 1155/2024, arts. 177.6 and 184.6). Details in renewal of permits.
- Silence does not close the case: the administration is still obliged to decide and notify expressly (Law 39/2015, art. 21.1). If you are refused or silence is negative, see appeals against refusals. For the extraordinary regularisation, there is a criterion on silence and the provisional authorisation: what it says.
- If they ask for documents (requerimiento): the period to fix the file is set by each procedure and stated in the notification (10 days in art. 77.4, up to 15 days in arts. 97 and 130.3; Law 39/2015, art. 68.1: 10 days). If you do not answer, you are treated as having withdrawn and the file is closed.
Notifications: where they arrive
- Appearing at the sede. According to the immigration FAQ, if you receive a notification notice, you go to the electronic office, section «Mis Expedientes», category «Extranjería», with a certificate issued for the NIF or NIE shown in the notice. If you cannot find the notification, open an incident with a screenshot; for non-technical questions, call 060 or contact the office handling your file.
- DEHú. The Ministry of Inclusion, in its questions and answers on the extraordinary regularisation (21.07.2026), says electronic notifications arrive at DEHú if you chose that route; if you did not choose electronic means, they go to the address or contact details you gave on the application. Which channel applies to you depends on how your application is processed: look at the notice you receive.
- Time to open it: an electronic notification, if mandatory or chosen, counts as rejected once 10 calendar days pass from when it is made available (Law 39/2015, art. 43.2). Check the mailbox regularly.
- Is electronic receipt mandatory? Notifications are preferably electronic and mandatory for those obliged to receive them that way (Law 39/2015, art. 41.1). The list of immigration applications with an obligation to deal electronically (art. 197.2 of RD 1155/2024) was annulled by the Supreme Court in July 2026. Do not assume anything: your procedure and the notice tell you.
What to do if it does not appear or does not change
- «No information found»: check the details you typed; if they are right, the file may not be computerised yet and you need the Immigration Office of your province.
- You cannot change file data online: the FAQ says you must go to the Immigration Office.
- For a question about your case: the form «Consultas dirigidas a las Oficinas de Extranjería» (for new queries; follow-up is under «Seguir una consulta») or phone 060.
- To add documents to an open file, the sede offers the procedure «Aportación de documentación a expedientes de extranjería» in Mercurio.
- When the permit is granted, the next step is usually the card: how to get the TIE and cita previa for immigration for fingerprints.
Cost
- The sede says the SMS has no additional cost. The pages we reviewed mention no fee for checking the status.
Where
- File status: InfoExt2 on the sede or directly InfoExt2.
- If you filed online with Mercurio, see Mercurio, how to submit an application: its card says the status is checked in InfoExt2.
