In short: Bono Alquiler Joven Spain 2026 is a rent subsidy for people up to 35 with limited income, and each autonomous community runs its own call separately. If you are not from the EU, RD 42/2022 asks for stay or regular residence in Spain; Madrid and Catalonia ask for legal residence. On 17.10.2026 the application window is closed in the calls we checked in Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, the Valencian Community and Extremadura (table at the end).

In person or by representative? It depends on the region. Applications are made mainly through each region's e-office (in Valencia with a digital certificate or Cl@ve; in the Canary Islands, preferably online). The Valencian Community also accepts applications in person at its Territorial Housing Services with a prior appointment. The sources we read do not say whether a representative can apply for you: confirm it in the rules of your call.

Legal basis: there are two State rules and they should not be mixed up. Royal Decree 42/2022 created the Bono Alquiler Joven. Since 24.04.2026 there is also Royal Decree 326/2026, which regulates the State Housing Plan 2026-2030 and provides a rent aid for young people's emancipation (arts. 132 to 139). The Plan applies only in the regions that sign an agreement with the Ministry (arts. 1.5 and 4); the Basque Country and Navarre are outside it, as they are outside the Bono (art. 2 of RD 42/2022).

Bono Alquiler Joven (RD 42/2022) Aid under the 2026-2030 Plan (RD 326/2026, arts. 132 to 139)
Age up to 35 inclusive (art. 6.1.a) 35 inclusive (art. 133.1.b)
Income up to 3 times the IPREM (art. 6.1.d) up to 5 times the IPREM; 5.5 with a disability (grade 33 % or more) or as a son or daughter of a victim of gender-based violence; 6 with a disability of 65 % or more (art. 133.1.d)
Amount 250 € a month, capped at the rent (art. 11) up to 300 € a month per home and 200 € per room, at most 60 % of the rent (art. 137)
Maximum rent 600 € a month, 300 € per room, can be raised to 900 € (art. 8) 1,000 € a month, 600 € per room; 500 € and 250 € in municipalities of up to 10,000 inhabitants (art. 133.1.e)
Length 2 years (art. 12) 2 years, extendable by 2 more if the region agrees (art. 134)
Non-EU foreigners «stay or regular residence» (art. 6.1.b) «legal residence» (art. 8.2.a)
Call published by each region open, continuous and permanent calls (art. 138)

Which figures apply to you is decided by your region's call. The 2026 calls we read in the Valencian Community, the Canary Islands and Extremadura set 250 € a month and 3 IPREM; Catalonia, 250 € and a cap of 25,200 € of annual income; Madrid, 3 IPREM. We have not found any call that applies the 300 € and 5 IPREM aid of RD 326/2026. The text of RD 326/2026 that we read does not expressly repeal RD 42/2022; according to the Canary Islands call, the 2026 calls are transitional and the Bono will be replaced by the Plan's new aid. The new aid for young people can be granted with effect from 1 January 2026 (first additional provision of RD 326/2026).

Requirements

Summary of what RD 42/2022 and the 2026 calls we read ask for. Your region may differ, and its rules prevail.

  • Age: up to 35 inclusive on the day you apply (art. 6.1.a). In Valencia, every holder of the lease.
  • Nationality and residence: Spanish, EU, EEA or Swiss. If you are from outside the EU, «stay or regular residence in Spain» (art. 6.1.b). RD 326/2026 speaks of «legal residence» (art. 8.2.a); Madrid and Catalonia use that wording too. We have not found a definition of «regular stay» in the texts we read: if your permit is a stay rather than a residence permit, ask your region's administration whether it counts (see types of residence).
  • DNI or NIE: neither RD 42/2022 nor RD 326/2026 names them as a requirement; they ask for regular stay or residence. Catalonia lists the NIE and the TIE among the documents for non-EU applicants. Your call says which ID it asks for (about the NIE).
  • Empadronamiento and main home: the home must be your habitual and permanent residence, shown by empadronamiento (registration at the address) throughout the aid period (art. 7). Madrid, Valencia, the Canary Islands and Extremadura ask for the collective empadronamiento certificate of the rented address (how to get it: empadronamiento certificate and registering for the first time).
  • Lease: be the tenant, or able to become one, under a lease governed by the LAU (the tenancy act) or a use-assignment contract; a room does not need to follow the LAU (art. 6.1.c). Valencia requires a lease of at least 1 year and excludes subletting and tourist lets; La Rioja, according to the BDNS, requires at least 1 year and excludes seasonal lets.
  • Income: up to 3 times the IPREM a year, counting the income of everyone living in the home (art. 6.1.d). With several young people in the same home the cap can rise and each region sets it: Valencia, 4 IPREM with two young people and 5 with three or more; Extremadura, according to the BDNS, 3.5 and 4. Catalonia sets a maximum of 25,200 € a year. Income must be regular: Valencia asks for at least 3 months of activity in the previous 6 or expected income for 6 months; La Rioja, according to the BDNS, 90 days of contributions in the previous 6 months.
  • Maximum rent: 600 € a month per home and 300 € per room in RD 42/2022, which can be raised to 900 € (art. 8). Each call sets its own: Madrid 600 € and 300 €, up to 900 € and 450 € in some municipalities; Catalonia, 900 € and 450 € in the Barcelona metropolitan area and less elsewhere; Valencia, by municipality (annex II of its rules).
  • Exclusions: owning or holding usufruct of another home in Spain (with exceptions in the rules) and being related up to second degree to the landlord or having a corporate link with them (art. 6.2).
  • Other aid: in general it cannot be combined with other rent aid, apart from each call's exceptions (Valencia; under the Plan, art. 136 of RD 326/2026).

Do not confuse this aid with the Bono Cultural Joven (the youth culture voucher) or with the general rent aid some regions run, which is a different line with different requirements (Catalonia called a rent aid for young people up to 35 from 29.06 to 10.07.2026; Castilla y León has general rent subsidies).

Documents

Indicative list: it may be incomplete, and your region's call sets the final one.

  • Rental or use-assignment contract, or pre-contract. If you have no signed contract yet, some regions let you hand in the empadronamiento later: Extremadura, within 2 months after notification; Valencia, within 3 months after the resolution.
  • Collective empadronamiento certificate, showing the date you were registered at the address.
  • ID and proof of your stay or residence permit (Catalonia asks non-EU applicants for the NIE and the TIE).
  • Proof of your regular income: employment, self-employment or a periodic benefit. RD 326/2026 provides that your IRPF data is checked with the Tax Agency or, if you object, an income certificate is needed (art. 8.2.b).
  • Paid rent receipts: Catalonia asks for the 2026 ones paid up to the application date and with no arrears; Madrid opens a payment-proof phase to receive the aid.
  • Being up to date with the tax authority and Social Security, under RD 326/2026 (art. 8.3).

Steps

  1. Open the «Where» table and go to your region's official page. If the window is closed, the next call will be published there, and it may already be the Plan's new 2026-2030 aid, with different figures; we cannot give you dates.
  2. Read in the rules the age, income, maximum rent and the stay or residence status asked of non-EU foreigners.
  3. Gather the contract, the empadronamiento at the home, your ID and proof of income.
  4. Apply within the window, through the e-office with a certificate or Cl@ve. In Valencia an application is not considered filed unless you register the signed receipt and the documents within the window.
  5. Answer correction requests (fixing or completing documents) and, when asked, hand in the rent payment receipts (Madrid, Catalonia).
  6. Wait for the decision: Valencia has 3 months and the Canary Islands 6 months, and in both silence counts as a refusal.

Deadlines

Each region opens and closes its own, and some run out before the final date: in Andalusia the window closed on 22.06.2026 on reaching 15,000 applications, and the Canary Islands grants in order of filing until the budget runs out. 2026 windows we checked: Catalonia, 09.03 to 13.03; Extremadura, 15.07 to 28.08; Valencia, 24.08 to 11.09; the Canary Islands, 18.09 to 08.10. If you already applied, phases may still be open after the general window has closed (corrections, documents, appeal).

Cost

Madrid's page says the procedure requires no fees. The other sources we read do not specify.

Next: if you want to buy rather than rent in a municipality of up to 10,000 inhabitants, the same Plan provides another aid: see youth home purchase aid in the Valencian Community. Your rights as a tenant are in renting in Spain as a foreigner. The rent deduction in the IRPF is a separate track, and its status on 08.10.2026 is in our news item on the deduction.

Frequently asked questions

Bono Alquiler Joven Spain 2026: when can I apply?

It depends on your autonomous community, because each one publishes its own call (the official opening of the application window). On 17.10.2026 the official pages for Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, the Valencian Community and Extremadura show the window as closed; Madrid shows «En plazo: permanente» but gives no dates for new applications. Check the table in this card and your region's e-office before preparing documents.

Can foreigners apply for the Bono Alquiler Joven?

Yes under the rules, with conditions. If you are not from the EU, Royal Decree 42/2022 asks for «stay or regular residence in Spain» (art. 6.1.b) and Royal Decree 326/2026, the new State Housing Plan, asks for «legal residence» (art. 8.2.a). Neither names the NIE as a requirement, but you must be registered (empadronado) at the rented home. Your region's call sets out exactly which documents it asks for.

What are the Bono Alquiler Joven requirements: age, income and lease?

Under Royal Decree 42/2022 (art. 6): up to 35 years old, annual income of up to 3 times the IPREM counting everyone living with you, and being the tenant (or able to become one) of a lease on the home where you live permanently. Maximum rent is 600 € a month, 300 € for a room, which can be raised to 900 € (art. 8). Each region adds conditions: Valencia, for example, requires a lease of at least 1 year. Read the rules of your call.

How much does the Bono Alquiler Joven pay and for how long?

The Bono pays 250 € a month, capped at the rent, for 2 years (arts. 11 and 12 of Royal Decree 42/2022). The aid in the new State Housing Plan 2026-2030 provides up to 300 € a month per home or 200 € per room, capped at 60 % of the rent, for 2 years extendable by 2 more if the region agrees (arts. 134 and 137 of Royal Decree 326/2026). Which amount applies is set by your region's call; the 2026 calls we read in Valencia, the Canary Islands, Extremadura and Catalonia set 250 €.

Do I need empadronamiento and a one-year lease?

Empadronamiento yes: the home must be your habitual and permanent residence, shown by registration at the address (art. 7 of Royal Decree 42/2022). The 1-year minimum is not in that decree, but it is in the rules of the Valencian Community and, according to the BDNS, of La Rioja; check your region's rules. If you do not have the certificate yet, Extremadura lets you hand it in within 2 months after notification of the aid.
