In short: arraigo renewal in Spain (called a prórroga in the regulation) is requested from 2 months before the authorisation expires up to 3 months after. The permit and its extension last 1 year (family arraigo, 5 years), the proof depends on the arraigo type, and the fee is 16.40 €.
In person or online? The official sources consulted do not fix the channel for the extension. The initial socioformativo application is filed in person at the Immigration Office (Hoja 30). By default, prepare to appear in person and confirm with your Oficina de Extranjería whether the extension is filed in person or online. The general renewal rules are in renewal of residence permits.
What the extension is. Arraigo is granted on exceptional grounds and, like its extension, lasts 1 year (family arraigo, 5 years; art. 132.1). The extension is conditional on meeting the requirement for your type (art. 132 of RD 1155/2024). If you are not sure which type you hold, see arraigo types.
Extension condition by type:
- Second chance, socio-labour and social: show active job search and registration at the public employment service. There are exceptions for justified reasons, such as illness, disability or having reached retirement age.
- Socioformativo: a report from the school certifying promotion to the second year (basic or mid-level cycles). If you finished the training before the year ended, proof of the diploma or certificate plus active job search and registration at the public employment service. - Family: lasts 5 years and the regulation lists no specific extension condition (art. 132.2).
Deadline: you can apply during the 2 months before expiry. If you file in that window, your previous authorisation stays valid until it is decided. An application is also accepted up to 3 months after expiry and validity continues until the decision, but sanction proceedings may be opened. Fee and form: the official form is EX-10. The fee is form 790, code 052, heading 2.4 (extension or renewal of temporary residence on exceptional grounds): 16.40 € (Order PJC/617/2025).
If you held the old arraigo para la formación (RD 557/2011). The Ministry of Inclusion's official guide points to a modification to a residence-and-work permit (art. 191 of RD 1155/2024) once the training is over. That route requires an employment contract or self-employment. Exceptionally, Instruction SEM 1/2025 (sixth) also lets you extend the old arraigo under art. 132 if it was still valid on 20.05.2025, you finished your studies, are actively looking for work and are registered with the public employment service.
