In short: Repatriating a Honduran who died in Spain has two routes. If the family has resources, the funeral home handles it and the Honduras Consulate in Madrid only issues, free of charge, the certificate for the departure of the remains. If the family has very limited means, it can ask for the Honduran government's help through the Consulate, and the first step is to write to them before hiring a funeral home.

In person or by representative? Private repatriation: no appointment is needed; you can write to the Consulate or go with the requirements. Repatriation with government help: the request is made in person by a first or second degree relative. The page does not say whether it can be done through a representative.

Important. The Consulate does not register deaths. On death matters it only issues the certificate for the departure of the remains, which is free. For other civil registry procedures see the guide Civil registry at the Honduras Consulate.

Private repatriation (the family has resources)

The funeral home handles it. The Consulate issues the certificate for the departure of the remains, required to transport the coffin or the ashes, at no cost.

Documents

  • Apostilled death certificate.
  • Medical certificate, if the death occurred in a hospital.
  • Embalming certificate, which confirms the body was prepared for transport.
  • Transit certificate, which some airlines require.

No appointment needed. You can write to [email protected] or go to the Consulate with the requirements.

Repatriation with Honduran government support (only in cases of high need)

The Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRECI) offers families with very limited means the repatriation of the remains, and the Consulate handles the procedures with the relatives and the Spanish authorities. The first step is to contact the Consulate: write to [email protected] to report the death. The Consulate warns you not to hire a funeral home on your own: if the family started the process or signed documents with a funeral home, the Honduran government cannot grant the help.

Requirements to receive the help:

  • The deceased must be Honduran.
  • The family has no means to pay for the repatriation.
  • The request is made by a first or second degree relative: parents, children, spouse, siblings, grandparents or grandchildren.
  • The request is made in person.
  • The Consulate handles the repatriation from the start.

Documents for the request

  • Repatriation request signed by the applicant.
  • Copy of the applicant's valid DNI or passport.
  • Birth certificates of the applicant and of the deceased, to prove the relationship. If names or surnames are inconsistent, additional documents are presented, such as the folios.
  • Photographs of the applicant's home, outside and inside: living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms.
  • Electricity bill.
  • Breakdown of expenses.

Repatriation routes according to the official page of the Honduras Consulate in Madrid.

Steps:

  1. Contact the Consulate and report the death. Do not hire a funeral home on your own.
  2. Submit the request to the Honduran Consular Section in Madrid or to the Foreign Ministry.
  3. Gathering data and requirements: the Consulate guides you through this step.
  4. The Secretariat of Foreign Affairs approves the request.
  5. The Consulate follows up with the funeral home.
  6. The remains travel to Honduras. The process can take 4 to 6 weeks.

If the family lives in Honduras, it can submit the request to the SRECI's Directorate General for the Protection of Honduran Migrants, in Tegucigalpa, next to the Supreme Court of Justice. Phone numbers are on the official page.

Registering the death in Honduras. The apostilled literal death certificate is sent to Honduras. A relative or legal representative registers it at the General Secretariat of the National Registry of Persons (RNP) in Tegucigalpa. The address is on the official page.
