In short: You apply for a Honduran passport in Madrid at the consulate, always with a free appointment and in person. Adults 21 and over: USD 75 (valid 10 years) or USD 60 (valid 5 years). Under 21: USD 60, valid 5 years. Delivered the same day if you bring everything.
In person or by representative? In person and personal; the source does not allow someone else to do it for you. A minor goes with their mother and father; if the father is not on the birth certificate, with the mother only. If one parent cannot come, the other brings a document authorizing it (see below).
Adults (21 and over)
Documents
- Passport appointment (free, see how to book).
- Physical, valid Honduran DNI.
- Previous passport, expired or about to expire. You can renew up to 6 months before expiry.
Special cases according to the Consulate:
- No physical DNI: if you lost it or left it in Honduras, you request a replacement at the Consulate on the day (USD 25). If you never applied, you enroll that same day with your previous passport (free the first time). The passport is issued only if the DNI is approved.
- Married surname: original marriage certificate from Honduras' National Registry of Persons (RNP). If you married abroad, it must first be registered with the RNP.
- Stolen or lost passport: photocopy of the passport and the police report from where it happened, or a sworn statement at the Consulate (USD 50).
- Damaged passport: you must bring it.
Under 21
A minor is anyone who has not turned 21 yet; at 21 they apply as an adult. The Consulate warns that if any requirement is missing, the minor will not be served.
Documents
- Free appointment in the minor's name, with their ID number (at the top of the birth certificate or in the passport).
- Original Honduran birth certificate. If the child is not yet registered at the Consulate, start with the birth registration, which is free and is where that certificate comes from.
- Mother and father present with a valid Honduran DNI, or a valid passport if foreign. If the father is not on the birth certificate, only the mother goes.
- Previous passport expired or close to expiry (renewal up to 6 months early).
- All documents legalized: foreign ones apostilled and translated into Spanish; Honduran ones authenticated by the relevant authority, usually the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ). Powers carry the CSJ authentication.
If one parent cannot come with the minor. The parent who attends presents one of these for the absent parent:
- An authorization or carta poder less than 6 months old, authorizing the accompanying person to renew the passport, legalized and with CSJ authentication.
- A custody power, legalized and with CSJ authentication.
- A parental authority ruling from a Honduran court.
- If the absent parent lives in another country: authorization from the Honduran consulate there, or a notarial authorization apostilled there and translated into Spanish.
Other situations for the minor
- Mother or father without a Honduran DNI: shows their valid Honduran passport and does the DNI enrolment the same day, for the first time or as a replacement. Book an enrolment appointment for that person, in addition to the minor's passport appointment.
- One parent has died: original death certificate, legalized.
- Parent's whereabouts unknown: parental authority ruling authenticated by the CSJ of Honduras.
- Parental authority granted by a court in another country: it must be registered with the CSJ of Honduras. Foreign rulings, for example Spanish ones, must be homologated in Honduras through exequatur.
- Minor's passport stolen or lost: police report and a copy of the passport; if you cannot file a report because you have no legal residence, a sworn statement at the Consulate (USD 50).
- Minor's passport damaged: bring it.
Payment: USD 60 (valid 5 years), on the day of the appointment by credit or debit card at the Consulate, or in cash by ATM deposit; the euro exchange amount is given that day.
Steps:
- Book the free appointment on the official site (in the minor's name, for a minor).
- Gather the documents for your case.
- Attend in person on the day and time (the minor with mother and father).
- Pay at the Consulate.
- You receive the passport the same day if all requirements are met.
