In short: to renew a Brazilian passport in Spain you apply through the e-consular platform of the Consulado-Geral do Brasil in Madrid or Barcelona. The adult fee is 60 € since 1 June 2026. In Barcelona, since 8 September 2026, the passport is produced by the Casa da Moeda in Brazil: it is no longer handed over the same day, and the average time is about 3 months.
What has changed.
- Fees: a new consular fee table has applied since 1 June 2026. Passport for people over 18, 60 €; children under 4, 20 €; from 4 up to under 18, 40 € (table of the Barcelona consulate; the Madrid page confirms the 60 € adult fee).
- Barcelona: since 8 September 2026, passports requested at an in-person appointment are made by the Casa da Moeda do Brasil and are not handed over on the day (consulate notice of 7 August). Documented emergencies keep priority: funeral or medical, a Brazilian tourist who lost a passport, and migration regularisation. Having already bought a plane ticket does not count as an emergency.
- Madrid: the Madrid page does not mention the Casa da Moeda or the 3-month time. For Madrid, ask the consulate for the current time.
In person or by representative? Mixed. You apply online through e-consular and then there are two routes: an in-person appointment at the consulate or sending by post. For the in-person route you go yourself (for a minor, the legal guardians too, see below). By post you can skip the trip, but the conditions differ between consulates. The pages do not mention a representative with a power of attorney for an adult's passport.
How it works. The procedure has two stages on e-consular. First you gather the documents and fill in the RER form (Recibo de Entrega de Requerimento, a receipt you print, sign and stick the photo on). Filling in the form is not enough: the consulate only reviews the request once you upload the scans to e-consular. If documents are missing or there are errors, you have to correct the submission and the review time starts again.
Documents (adult; list of the Barcelona consulate, with Madrid differences noted)
- CPF (Brazilian taxpayer number). Compulsory; if you do not have it, get it first from the Receita Federal.
- Original certidão de nascimento or marriage certificate. Barcelona rejects documents that are very old, damaged, of unconfirmed authenticity and laminated. Madrid asks for original and copy and also accepts a naturalisation certificate; if your name changed, a certificate proving it.
- Brazilian photo ID (RG, physical or digital CNH, Carteira de Trabalho, professional card; or a passport that is valid or expired less than 2 years ago, per Barcelona). If the photo on the document is very old, a second photo ID is needed.
- Current passport. Barcelona: if valid, bring (or send) it; if expired you do not have to present it, though it is recommended for cancellation. Madrid asks for the previous one in original and copy, even if expired. If it was lost or stolen, a police report (boletim de ocorrência) is needed.
- Recent 3x4 photo taken by a professional, in colour, white background, neutral expression. Selfies, home photos, edited photos, photos altered by artificial intelligence and photos used in earlier passports are not accepted. Madrid adds that it must be less than 6 months old.
- Military document, compulsory for men aged 18 to 45: proof of enlistment, exemption from service or reservist certificate. If you turned 18 and have not enlisted, you must enlist first; Madrid says you can do it from abroad.
- Certidão de quitação eleitoral (a certificate that you are up to date with your electoral obligations), compulsory from 18 to 70. It is issued on the website of the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral. Barcelona warns that in 2026 the closing of the electoral register affects passport issue; check the link on its page.
- Printed RER receipt, signed, with the photo stuck on.
Payment. By debit card at the consulate or by bank transfer; cash is not accepted. Barcelona takes Visa or Mastercard debit and warns of a 0.45 % bank fee on cards issued in Spain. Madrid asks for a debit card from a Spanish bank (no credit or foreign cards). For a transfer, the reference must state the service and the holder's name (for example, «Passaporte de» and the name); the current bank details are in the Barcelona fee table and, for Madrid, the consulate sends them after validating the request.
Barcelona, in-person appointment. When your documents are validated, e-consular emails you to book. If there are no slots, try again: new slots open Monday to Friday after midnight Barcelona time, for 30 days ahead. You can reschedule only once; a second time you need a new request, which is reviewed again. The passport then arrives from Brazil. You can collect it at the consulate (they email you) or receive it by post: in that case you buy and bring on the day of the appointment a prepaid 1 kg Correios envelope (PAQ PREMIUM 1 KG), as the consulate states.
Barcelona, by post. Payment is by bank transfer only (keep the receipt, you attach it in e-consular). First you upload the scans. When they are validated you get an email with instructions and only then do you send the physical documents: if they arrive before validation, the consulate returns them unprocessed. If the documents are incomplete or not originals, the service is not carried out and everything is returned. The passport and your originals come back by post to the address you gave.
Madrid, by post. The postal route is only for people whose fingerprints were already taken when they processed their last passport. Payment is by transfer. You send the previous original passport; the other documents in original or as a copy certified by a notary.
Validity. According to the Madrid page, the passport is valid for 10 years; if you do not present your current valid passport, the new one is valid for 4 years.
Under 18 (Barcelona pages, in person and by post; our source does not include the Madrid page for minors)
- The child's CPF. If they do not have one, either get it first from the Receita Federal or choose «CPF + Passaporte de menor» in e-consular; in that case attending the consulate is compulsory and both are done together.
- Original birth certificate (certidão). If the child was born outside Brazil, the birth must first be registered at a Brazilian consulate: the foreign certificate alone is not enough. In e-consular choose «Registro de Nascimento + Primeiro Passaporte».
- Travel authorisation for minors (APAV form): bring it filled in but unsigned; the legal guardians sign it in front of the consular agent. If one cannot attend, they sign before a notary with simple signature recognition (the consulate says about 12 € in Spain) and the signed form is presented. If the guardian is in Brazil, they sign and have the signature recognised at a Brazilian cartório and send the original.
- Cases without the APAV from both: a certidão naming only one parent, a recent court decision (at most 1 year) authorising one, a power of attorney (at most 2 years) with specific powers, or a decision removing one parent's parental authority. A decision that only grants custody or sole parental authority is not enough on its own.
- Guardians' ID: valid passport, RG, CNH or another Brazilian photo document; foreigners, a valid passport.
- 3x4 photo like the adult one; babies up to 1 year may have their eyes closed; from 6 full years, a neutral expression.
- Children aged 12 or more must attend the consulate to give fingerprints.
- Payment is by debit at the appointment or by transfer (by post, transfer only). The 3-month average and production in Brazil appear on the Barcelona pages.
Jurisdiction. Which regions each consulate serves we could not confirm on the pages consulted; check the «Jurisdição» section of the consulate website before choosing.
