In short: the Spain Italy border controls of October 2026 are extended for the third time. Order INT/1033/2026, published in the BOE on 6 October, keeps identity checks on flights and ships arriving from Italy from 8 to 22 October. It is not in force yet: it starts on the 8th.
What changes for you today
Nothing. The previous extension stays in force until 7 October, explained in the card on Order INT/977/2026. If you travel from Italy to Spain, the check is the same before and after the 8th. The reference card for the new order is Order INT/1033/2026.
What happened
The Interior Ministry signed Order INT/1033/2026 on 1 October and the BOE published it on 6 October. It extends by another 15 days the checks at the internal air and sea borders for people arriving from Italy. It is the third extension; before it came Order INT/846/2026 (8 August to 7 September), INT/932/2026 (8 to 22 September) and INT/977/2026 (23 September to 7 October).
How it works now
Until 7 October the INT/977/2026 extension applies: identity checks for people arriving from Italy on a passenger flight or ship. The orders contain no list of documents; the usual advice is to carry a valid passport or ID.
What would change
In substance, nothing. The new order repeats the measure with new dates: 8 to 22 October. The text adds no checks at other borders and names no specific airports or ports. The reason it gives: urgency and a serious threat to public order and internal security, with no further detail.
What happens next
The checks end on their own at 24:00 on 22 October. The order says there is no automatic renewal: continuing would need another reasoned order. There is none for now, so we do not know whether a fourth extension will come or when it would be decided. We will review this item around 23 October.
What you can do
If you will arrive in Spain from Italy between 8 and 22 October, carry a valid passport or ID and, if you are not an EU citizen, your TIE or visa. Allow some extra time. For questions about your case, check the official source in the BOE or ask your airline or ferry company.
